Moon Knight star Oscar Isaac explains why the new Disney + series does not take place in New York City, the home of his cartoon counterpart.
Unlike his comic book counterpart, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) version of Moon Knight / Marc Spector will not be based in New York City. In fact, Marvel, which crowds NYC with superheroes, is the reason the series moved the hero to London.
“It was happening in London. And when I asked why, it was as if the answer was that we just have too many characters in New York,” explained Moon Knight himself, Oscar Isaac. “So it looks like let’s just change it. Let’s make him an expat in London.”
In the comics, NYC is the epicenter of the Marvel universe, where many of the heroes call the city their home. Various MCU movies and TV series are based in or feature major fights in NYC, including The amazing Hulk, The AvengersDoctor Strange, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Hawkeye and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Netflix’s Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron fist, The defenders and The punisher also all took place in different areas of the city.
However, the MCU has also branched out into other localities. Iron Man takes place in Los Angeles, while Ant-Man and the Wasp and Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings is based in San Francisco. Knights of the Moon will not even be the first time MCU travels to England, as Spider-Man: Far from home highlighted Peter Parker travels across the pond on a school trip and Eternal so Sersi and Sprite hide in London.
While Moon Knight calls NYC his home in the comics, he has had his fair share of adventures outside of the Big Apple. His early comics took him to Egypt, Jerusalem, Chicago and secret islands in the Indian Ocean. Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev even based their entire race with the character in Los Angeles, making Spector a TV producer.
While Knights of the Moon starts his MCU race in London, he may not stay there forever. Series director Mohamed Diab sees the Khonshu fist continue for at least a decade, which will no doubt offer new places for the hero to explore. “I can see [Moon Knight] in [the MCU] in the next ten years, not just the next movie, “Diab said.” He is a very interesting character. He is probably the most interesting character for any actor to play. Oscar [Isaac] does a good job. People already like him even from the trailer. I think the show is going to resonate with people, so I’m watching him stay for a long time. “
