It’s more than five years since Jared Leto (Morbius, House of Gucci) began to tease the possibility of one Tron 3. However, the time has come to get the rumor mill back on track with a promising update. The whisper of one Tron 3 began in 2017 when Leto said he could star in one Tron restart, which was later revealed to be more of a successor than a reset of the franchise. The project remained little more than an idea until 2020, when Disney blew the dust off the project and put it back into development. With talk about Tron 3 back in the mix, Garth Davis (Lion, Enemy) was named the film’s director. According to a recently deleted tweet from Leto, the film was given the title Tron: Ares, but it never happened. Talk about one Tron the sequel was quiet shortly thereafter, bringing us to today where Leto says there is still hope.
While talking to the nice people over at Screenrant about his upcoming film MorbiusLeto offered an update that there was some movement for Tron franchise:
“I’m a super fan of Tron and we work hard at Tron with our incredible partners at Disney. Just a wonderful group of creative people. We’re getting closer. We’re getting closer and closer, and who knows? Anything can be [coming] sooner rather than later.“
With Davis attached to the instruction, Leto lined up to play the lead role, and a script by Jesse Wigutow (It runs in the family), it is possible that Disney is finally ready to revisit the well for another Tron movie? We have to wait and see as Disney still has not officially given the project the green light.
Disney revived its Tron franchise in 2010, with Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde and a recurring Jeff Bridges crossing The Grid once again for a technologically charged adventure. Tron: Legacy earned $ 400 million at the worldwide box office, though the film was plagued with mixed reviews from both critics and fans. In addition to the film, the characters Sam Flynn and Quorra were included as playable characters in the toy-to-life video game Disney Infinity. Unfortunately, Tron: Legacy did not show enough interest in the property to begin work Tron 3and the franchise has been dormant ever since.
What do you think about Disney possibly firing the old circuit boards up to Tron 3? Do you think Leto should star in the film? Should Disney create a think tank for some fresh ideas for the franchise? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
