Spoiler alarm! This story contains spoilers too This is us’ Season 6 episode “The Hill”.
The last Big Three trilogy continued with This is us‘s latest episode, “The Hill,” and this week was all about our Katie girl – yes, Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) to be exact. Fans have known that “KaToby” is on the way to divorce, and it’s been hard to see the cracks grow bigger in their relationship so far this season. This episode did not give the death blow to the marriage, as we know from a flash-forward that an accident with little Jack and the family smoker will be involved but the pair seemed to hit the point of no return.
Chrissy Metz actually co-wrote “The Hill” – like Susan Kelechi Watson was involved in writing the great Beth episode earlier this season – which ended with Kate making a huge decision for herself. The episode showed Kate visiting Toby in San Francisco, and although they both agreed that long-distance marriage did not work for them, they each made strong arguments as to why the other should be the one to move. Toby took it a step too far by giving Kate an ultimatum, saying the only way their marriage would work was if she and the kids moved there. Metz told THAT ONE she thinks that was the moment Kate knew it was over.
I think it was the audacity that he even said I have to do it. Why is it I have to be the one to move when everything is settled and good in LA? I think she eventually realized, ‘Oh, we’ll never be on the same page. Even if I moved there, it would be something else. ” Because of distress or because he would not hurt her feelings and was never honest with her. Whatever his reasoning was, it’s like, ‘This is a struggle that we will continue to have over and over and over again because we are two different people now in two different places, and happiness means two different things. ‘
The probably saddest part was that they both came up with really good points about why they could not be the one to move. Kate said she could not uproot Jack, who is blind, just as he is learning to navigate his house and neighborhood, and she did not want to leave either. Rebeccalike her Alzheimer’s is getting worse. Toby pointed out that his job in San Francisco was the only way he could make enough money to make sure Jack had the services he needed when he was growing up.
Toby, however, failed to tell Kate that he had turned down a job in Los Angeles and continued with a worrying pattern of making big decisions on his own. “The Hill” even contained another example of it when he revealed that he had been pre-approved to buy a house that he had chosen for all of them to move into. Chrissy Metz pointed out how long Toby has been doing it over for Kate, and said she was finally strong enough to stand up for herself.
He has convinced her since the weight loss group – she said she did not want a boyfriend. She has calmed down and he has convinced her and she is like, [affects pleasant tone], ‘Okay.’ And now she says, ‘Oh hell, no! I can not do this! ‘
The end of the section, which was instructed by Mandy Mooreso Kate literally climbed a hill (which Toby did not think she would be able to) and called future husband Philip to ask to be considered for a full-time position at the school.
