The CW provides early renewals for seven of its 19 scripted original series, including The Flash, Superman & Lois and Riverdale.
The CW renewed seven out of its 19 scripted original series, including Arrowverse shows Lightning and Superman and Lois.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, seven shows return for the 2022-2023 broadcast season on The CW, including All American for season 5, Lightning for season 9, Kung Fu for season 3, Nancy Drew for season 4, Riverdale for season 7, Superman and Lois for season 3 and Walker for season 3.
“As we prepare for the 2022-23 season, these script series, along with the alternative series we renewed earlier, will serve as the start of a solid foundation that leverages some of our most watched series that we can build on for the next years and beyond, “said Mark Pedowitz, CEO of The CW Television Network. “These dramas are also important to our overall digital strategy, as they are some of our most streamed and socially engaged programs, and we look forward to adding more new and recurring series to help strengthen and expand our multiplatform footprint. “
Although these seven shows have received early renewals for additional seasons, it is still leaving Batwoman, Charmet, Dynasty, In the dark, Legacies, Legends of Tomorrow, Roswell, Star girl and four shows still in their first season, inclusive All American: Homecoming, 4400, Naomi and Tom Swift.
Lightning was expected to return for a ninth season, following reports from January 2022 that its star Grant Gustin was in talks to sign on for a further 15 episodes. This would do Lightning the longest-running Arrowverse series on The CW after Arrow, which ran for eight seasons. As for the Jared Padalecki leadership Walkerthe series has already spawned an upcoming prequel series titled Walker: Independenceas recently cast Arrow star Kat McNamara in the lead role. Independence officially received a pilot order on The CW in February 2022, with Padalecki attached to executive products.
Riverdale is currently airing its sixth season. In December 2021, star Lili Reinhart discussed the possibility of additional seasons for the Archie Comics-based drama, stating that season 7 “will probably be the last.” However, this has not been confirmed by The CW.
It was announced in January 2022 that WarnerMedia and ViacomCBS were in discussions about selling The CW, where Nexstar Media Group is said to be the frontrunner. Of the seven shows that received early renewals, four are produced by Warner Bros. Television (Lightning, Superman and Loisand Kung Fu), while two are produced by CBS Studios (Nancy Drew and Walker). However, Riverdale is produced by both Warner Bros. TV and CBS Studios.
