Margot Robbie, who has played Harley Quinn in several DC films, states she is excited to see Lady Gaga portray the character in the Joker sequel.
Margot Robbie shared her thoughts on Lady Gaga being cast as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux.
Robbie, who has played Harley Quinn in three DC Extended Universe films, told MTV News she is excited Gaga can create her own version of the character in the Joker sequel. “It makes me so happy,” Robbie claimed. “I said from the very beginning all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters the way Macbeth or Batman always gets passed, you know, from great actor to great actor.” The actor added that it is rare to see that happen with female characters, so she is glad she was able to establish a foundation that other actors can build on. Speaking of Gaga in Joker: Folie à Deux, Robbie said, “I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”
In August 2022, it was announced that Gaga would portray Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker in the sequel to the massively successful 2019 film. Though specific plot details have not yet been revealed, there are reports that Joker: Folie à Deux will be almost entirely set in Arkham Asylum and may also be a musical. If this is the case, Gaga will fit right in, as she first rose to prominence as a musician and has sold millions of records worldwide.
Will Margot Robbie Play Harley Quinn Again?
Robbie starred as Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad, 2020’s Birds of Prey, and 2021’s The Suicide Squad, the latter directed by James Gunn. Gunn previously weighed in on Gaga’s casting as Harley, claiming he is interested to see what director Todd Philips comes up with for the sequel. “I met Lady Gaga once and she was really nice, so I’m always rooting for nice people to do well,” Gunn said on his Instagram story.
It has not yet been announced if Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn in future films. However, upon the release of The Suicide Squad in 2021, Robbie insisted she’s ready to play the character again. Warner Bros. has not revealed any plans for a third Suicide Squad movie, and Gunn confirmed the rumor that director David Ayer is returning to the franchise is untrue.
Joker: Folie à Deux hits theaters Oct. 4, 2024.
