Vitamin D Supplements: The reason redheads need more vitamin D than others

You may think that having yellow skin means you are less likely to get enough vitamin D, but that is not true.

Lack of melanin in the skin means that ginger people actually get adequate amounts of vitamin D in low light conditions.

However, yellow skin puts you at a higher risk of skin cancer because it contains less melanin to provide protection from the sun.

People with dark skin (especially from African, African-Caribbean or South Asian backgrounds), on the other hand, cannot produce enough vitamin D from sunlight.
