Officials say a man in police custody was shot and killed in a North Carolina emergency room early Saturday after a scuffle with an officer
DURHAM, NC — A man in police custody was shot and killed early Saturday in a North Carolina emergency room after scuffle with an officer, officials said.
The man was in the custody of Durham Police Department and treated at Duke University Hospital, news agencies reported.
While he was being treated, he began wrestling with an officer and took his gun, Duke’s health director Sarah Avery said in a statement.
A Duke University officer responded and shot the man, the statement said. Duke Health medical personnel cared for the man, but he did not survive. No one else was injured.
The emergency room remained open with reduced capacity as authorities searched the scene.
Neither the man nor the officers involved were immediately identified. It is not clear why the man was arrested and why he was under medical treatment.
