One of the biggest events in the Big East will be without a coach for its next game. Georgetown announced Wednesday that coach and Hoya legend Patrick Ewing will not be coaching the team’s upcoming tournament against Butler because Ewing is in COVID protocol.
Hoyas and the Bulldogs are scheduled to meet Thursday at Washington’s Capitol One Arena, with DC assistant coach Louis Orr guiding Georgetown in Ewing’s absence as he seeks to lead Hoyas to a .500 conference record and a .500 lead in the season.
This is Georgetown’s first game in six days and the second Big East game of the year since Hoyas canceled four conference games in a 14-day period.
According to the Big East New revised seizure policyGames will be canceled if a team has fewer than seven scholarship players and a qualified coach. At the point of cancellation, the game will try to reschedule, otherwise the game will be considered a competition.
Patrick Ewing’s record in Georgetown
Ewing took over his alma mater ahead of the 2017-18 season and Hoyas has hovered around .500 ever since. The Basketball Hall of Famer played in Georgetown from 1981-85 under the leadership of legendary coach John Thompson Jr.

Anyway, Georgetown won the Big East Conference Tournament last year to earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, losing only in the first round. This is the team’s first and only NCAA tournament berth under Ewing.

Ewing was one of the best players to be suitable for Thompson, who was acclaimed after Ecclesiastes. In his four years with the Hoyas, Ewing was named an NCAA Champion in 1984 and National Player of the Year in 1985.
He was also a three-time first-team All-American and two-time Big East Player of the Year and four-time All-Conference selection. Ewing was one of 26 Thompson protgs to draft in the NBA and one of eight to go to the first round.
