Costa Concordia’s tenth anniversary commemorated

Italy has celebrated the tenth anniversary of the tragedy of the cruise ship Costa Concordia with a day-long memorial.

The lives of 32 passengers were claimed when the liner got too close to the Italian island of Giglio and crashed into rocks.

The collision tore a hole in the ship’s hull and 4,000 people rushed to the lifeboats to escape – including the ship’s Captain Francesco Schettino.

Schettino is serving a 16-year sentence for manslaughter, causing a maritime accident and abandoning ship in front of passengers and crew.
