Brasilia:

Mike Ryan, the World Health Organization’s emergency director, on Wednesday refuted claims by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro that an omikron version of the coronavirus would be welcomed and could end the epidemic.

In an earlier interview, Bolsonaro played in advance of the new edition in Brazil.

During a press conference in Geneva, when asked about the statement made by the Brazilian president, Ryan confirmed that Omikron “is less serious as a viral infection in a person, which means it is not a mild disease.”

In the hospital, in the ICU, there are many people around the world who breathe, who “clearly make it clear that this is not a mild disease,” he added.

“It’s a vaccine-preventable disease, it’s a disease that can be prevented to a large extent – by avoiding infection and by taking strict personal precautions,” he said.

“There are many things we can do. This is not the time to give up, this is not the time to give up, this is not the time to declare a welcome virus. Any virus that kills people is not welcome. It can be stopped, ”he said.
