Alexis Sanchez scored in the final kick of the game as Inter Milan beat arch-rivals Juventus 2-1 in extra time on Wednesday to win the Italian Super Cup.

Sanchez’s goal, aided by Juventus’ defensive error, sparked wild celebrations in San Siro as almost all members of the Inter Bench rushed to the field in the far corner to embrace Sanchez.

Lautaro Martिनेnez scored from the penalty spot in the first half to seal the opening of American midfielder Weston McKenzie’s opener for Juventus in the first Silverware game of the season.

Defending champions Juventus have won a record nine wins in the Italian Super Cup. But last season, Inter and former coach Antonio Conte won nine consecutive Serie A titles.

After playing on the bench, Sanchez told MediaSet: “The more champions he plays, the better he is, and he does things no one else can do.

“That’s what happened today. I thought I’d start because I was in the firm, I respect the coach but I was hungry for victory … I felt like a lion in a cage.”

Inter, which is 11 points ahead of Juventus after a difficult start to the season, has taken the lead in Serie A again.

Inter coach Simon Inzaghi extended his impressive record against Juventus in the Italian Super Cup, having won his previous two games against Bianconeri in 2017 and 2019 when Lazio was in charge.

Juventus was without many players through injury and suspension, while goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was on the bench because he had just received a second dose of vaccine against coronavirus and could not get in touch with his teammates. Shortly before the kick-off due to new rules taking effect in Italy on Monday.

Inter wasted many chances to take the lead in the first 10 minutes. Nerazzurri also thought he should be awarded a penalty when Nicolo Barella was bared at the shoulder by Giorgio Chiellini but, after a quick check with the video assistant referee, continued the game.

Inter goalkeeper Sameer Handanovic had so many spectators in the opening quarter of an hour that he tried to do jumping jacks in the middle of his own half in an attempt to keep San Siro warm on a cold night.

But Inter were forced to pay for their profiling when, following a series of crosses, Alvaro Morata turned the ball over to McKenzie at the far end of the net. However, shortly after that, Inter was awarded a penalty.

Juventus defender Mattea de Siglio tried to clear the ball but did not notice Edin Dze running after him and brought Inter down. Martinez struck a penalty in the upper right corner.

Juventus almost regained their lead early in the second half, but Federico Bernardechi scored a wide goal from the right post.

Denzel Dumfries’ header from Hakan Kalhanoglu’s cross brought Inter closer in the hour, but Matthias Perrin managed to get his hands on the goal frame. Perrin also made a good save to keep Martनेnez’s header away from close range.

Inter took the lead in extra time, but Sचेnchez headed in a wide corner.

As the game progressed towards the penalty spot, Juventus gave the winning gift to Inter. Bianconeri defender Alex Sandro tried to chest the ball to Cellini but gave Sanchez a chance to flick Matthew Darmian back home.
