Garbin Muguruza arrives in Sydney quarters

Second seed Garbin Muguruza of Spain advanced to the quarterfinals after beating Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-1, 7-6 (4) at the Sydney Tennis Classic on Wednesday.

Muguruza saved six of the seven break points in a game of one hour and 26 minutes and converted all three break points. Russia’s Daria Kasatkina then defeated Belgium’s Alice Mertens 6-3, 6-4.

Third seed Barbora Krajikova of the Czech Republic, fourth seed Annette Kontavit of Estonia and fifth seed Paula Badosa of Spain also won in straight sets. No. 9 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan has been ruled out of a walkover over Caroline Garcia of France due to a thigh injury.

France’s Ocean Dodin was 6-2, 5-6 ahead of Switzerland’s Belinda Bensic when rain stopped play.

Third seed Koko Goff advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Marta Kostuk of Ukraine 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in straight sets in Adelaide, Australia.

The 17-year-old Gaff finished the nearly two-hour game by winning the last four games. In the last eight, her opponent is Anna Konjuh of Croatia, who defeated sixth seed Marqueta Vondrosova of the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3).

Fourth-seeded Tamara Gidansek of Slovenia, 8th-seeded Lyudmila Samsonova of Russia and all-seeded Americans Alison Riske and Madison Keys all won in straight sets. Another American, Lauren Davis, advanced to the quarterfinals, beating Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
