the former Zoey 101 star, 30, revealed her dad Jamie’s decades-long battle with alcohol created “anxiety and” “sorrow” during an interview about her new memoir Things I Should Have Said.
speaking to Good Morning America about her tell-all book, Jamie Lynn also opened up about Britney’s downward spiral in the early 2000s.
“He spent most of my life in that cycle of ruinous behavior. His bouts of drinking always caused me periods of torment and sorrow,” Jamie-Lynn wrote in the memoir, which was read aloud during the interview.
“It created a lot of anxiety,” the Sweet Magnolias actress said. “The hardest part was, ‘Could I trust you? Are you drinking? Are you not?’ It was something no kid should have to question.”
When asked about her sister Britney’s “state of mind”, Jamie Lynn stayed tight-lipped but listened as the host Juju Chang read her description of the pop star in the book.
“Words that you’ve used in the book to describe her behavior over your lifetime was ‘erratic, paranoid and spiralling’, how do you see your sister’s state of mind currently?” Chang asked.
“I can’t really speak to anyone else’s state of mind, I don’t think that’s fair. But I’m allowed to say how I felt in those [moments] because that matters,” Jamie Lynn replied. “It matters that I was in pain.”
Jamie Lynn has been the subject of criticism after Britney publicly slammed her family for their part in her 13-year conservatorship.
The mother-of-two defended her role in Britney’s downfall, claiming she was too young to understand when the conservatorship was put in place.
“I was happy,” Jamie Lynn said, when asked about her reaction to the conservatorship dissolution.
“First off, I don’t understand… when it was put into place I was a 17-year-old who was about to have a baby. I didn’t understand what was happening. I understand just as little about it then as I do now.”
Britney’s relationship with her father Jamie, mother Lynne and sister has been increasingly bitter following the termination of the popstar’s conservatorship in November.
the Toxic singer has offered breadcrumbs of information on her feelings towards her parents and sister on Instagram, writing in October: “This message is to my family … for hurting me deeper than you’ll ever know.”
Britney also slammed Jamie Lynn in a since-deleted Instagram post in July, criticizing her sister for performing her songs at an award show in 2017.
“I don’t like that my sister showed up at an awards show and performed MY SONGS to remixes !!!!! My so-called support system hurt me deeply !!!!” she wrote.
“This conservatorship killed my dreams,” she added. “So all I have is hope and hope is the only thing in this world that is very hard to kill … yet people still try !!!!”
