SYDNEY, Jan 11 (Xinhua) – Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has expressed doubts about whether he will be ready to play in the upcoming Australian Open from the Sydney Tennis Classic after testing positive for the Covid 19.
Kyrgios withdrew just hours before his scheduled game against Italian world number 36 Fabio Fognini on Monday.
“I want to be open and transparent to everyone. The reason I left Sydney is because I tested positive for Covid,” Kyrgios said in a post on social media.
Kyrgios plans to take part in the Australian Open, which starts in Melbourne on January 17.
“I am feeling healthy right now without any symptoms. I wish you all the best and stay safe wherever you can. If all goes well, I will see you all at the Australian Open.”
Kyrgios was ranked 13th in the world, but has dropped to 114th in recent months due to injury and shortness of breath.
At last year’s Australian Open, Kyrgios lost in the third round to Dominic Thiem of Austria.
