Best previews, tips and best bets for Doomben Wednesday

Graeme Kerry gives his race-by-race preview for Dumben’s meeting on Wednesday.

Dumben always has an advantage with on-pacers and with an 8.5 meter rail out on the soft track where we will look for winners.

Race 1 – Three year old Benchmark 68 Handicap 1050 min

Chris Lees is striking at 25 per cent in Queensland and both of his charges have been well-received, always benefiting Dumben on this trip. The recent NSW form has served us well and MYSTIC GEM (5) will make it easier than the last launch. She won her first start here and Andrew Malyan made a good ride for the stable. Stable partner ASHERLA (7) has the momentum, has won here before and will appreciate Kyle Wilson-Taylor’s claim with the fitness edge in his opponents. She can set the tempo and be the one to run down.

Both RUBIQUITOUS (1) wins came for the first time and the most recent was in class on Saturday at Eagle Farm. In her only Dumben outing she was beaten compressed by MYSTIC GEM and met on similar terms. She is groomed by Jumpouts and is worthy of consideration with Brad Stewart.

Self Indulgent (8) was a favorite beat when resuming class on Saturday but it will be easy and Tony Golan horses will always improve on second-up.

I LL TELL YOU KNOW (2) Drives the gun behind speed and Jim Byrne is in good form.

WEINERI (4) is returning from prison. He needs a long time but has two tests under his belt and Robbie Fred Edmunds rides well for the stable.

Betting Strategy – A Kris Lees quinella worth MYSTIC GEM (5).

Race 2 – Maiden Plate 1050 min

Most of these are insecure or resuming. Look at the market.

Lee Friedman hasn’t made a big impression since he founded the Gold Coast, but some well-bred young horses are coming, and the private sector (6) has benefited from recent tests. In his Queensland debut he was in a work-in-progress after being hampered by a break-in and later gelded. If the last gear change worked, he could be much better off with Samantha Colette from Get One.

Tony Golan has three acceptors, two in his debut and one in his resume. Call from Heaven (8) is being well tested and will have every chance with Ben Thompson. Stablemate DRAMATTICA (9) has also been found useful in trials and will benefit from a tongue-tie in its debut. LA FEMME DE FORTE (12) Tough tests but needs to improve on her debut effort.

AFROGINASOK (1) may need to run in Ipswich but the fitter will strip and the tongue-tie will be closed. He has speed, weighs 4kg and can end up with a positive ride.

DUSTY DIAMOND (2) has improved on the last start and the rest of the field has fitness age. He may like big tracks but he has speed in hand.

Betting Strategies – One to Lose Private Sector (6).

Race 3 – Three year old maiden plate 1200 min

Another race where there are mostly resumes, honors or very light races.

ROYAL REBELLION (10) finished in the top four in all four outings in his first preparation but could not finish the job. She has benefited from the recent test and will have all sides with Jim Byrne. Stablemate did well in the most intoxicating (11) tests, and the widely drawn Brett Preble could not be underestimated.

Hatchett (4) is restarting after his debut and Rob Heathcote can prepare them for the first-up. He will not be far from the speed and can cut them slowly.

Spill the Secret (5) made the field and was not far in his debut. Extra distance would be appropriate and he would have every opportunity with Brad Stewart.

Tony Sears doesn’t bring them to town and DAZZLING FLASH (8) has won both recent trials at Toowoomba. She changes gears and Georgina Cartwright has speed to cross the wide gate.

Betting Strategies – More Opportunities, See Market

Race 4 – Benchmark 75 Handicap 2050 min

Brian Smith is returning SCICONIC (2) to his best and he was well supported when he was narrowly beaten in Ipswich. Fitter now, this is his distance and he gets another chance with Larry Cassidy.

Stuck with you (1) has beaten a better field than this last start and has shown in the past that he can string many wins together. Kyle Wilson-Taylor remains and the 3.5kg extra weight may not be enough to stop him.

Outback Gladiators (7) are looking for a hat-trick and despite being tough, he is very fit, has lost 2.5 kg and will be in the box seat with Ben Thompson.

Lady Solerno (6) may be hard to follow but she won the final start on a wet track in Saturday’s grade and could do so again if she gets a soft lead.

TAKEITTOTHELIMIT (5) is a mare but can be slow if she gets the right tempo.

Betting Strategy – I gave SCICONIC (2) a final start and will stay with him.

Race 5 – Benchmark 75 Handicap 1110 min

David Wendy is always a threat in midweek and he has two strong chances here. Import BEAU IDEAL (1) is new to the stable and while he hasn’t won in 222 weeks there have been two long injury breaks. A two-time winner in France, he ran in good company under the Godolphin banner and in the final outing in class 6 on Saturday. He has benefited from two trials, a strong pace would be appropriate and with Leah Kilner’s claim he needs the will to win. Fixed partner TOOROOLOO (5) disappointed the final start after a first-up win but would appreciate the drop in grades and could bounce back with Ryan Maloney.

WUDANG BLADE (2) has been around for a long time but 3kg claimant Minonette Kennedy is in form and will take a look.

RAMTASTIC (4) has made two moderate attempts since the restart but has a good third-up record and will run a strong tempo off gun.

The Royal Banquet (6) disappointed the final preparations but won four in 2020 and appeared in recent tests. Winkers goes back and it is up to him if he can recapture his former NSW form.

The AIR SPIRIT (9) has only won the 1000m but must be ready to strike third.

Betting Strategies – Expect vandy horses to race well.

Race 6- Class 1 Disability 1650 min

David Vandike likes to work his horses through the classrooms and KERCHAK (4) showed some of his ability by bolting to Ipswich to win his maiden. Breeding to win the Derby, Ryan Maloney will keep him close to the pace and Maiden to Class 1 is always hard he can take the next step through the ranks.

RATIONS (6) is a moody mare but at least she went to the gates at the last start and finished the gameplay to become the runner-up in class 2 above 1400m. She’ll find it more appropriate and if not better for Brad Stewart.

Pedal to the Metal (5) did well to win his Maiden at Ipswich when it was his second outing for Edmunds. He is the one who looks progressive and will appreciate this distance.

TRENCH WARFARE (1) is more of a placegator than a winner and has been in placement on both outings since joining Matt Dunn. He will step away in a distance suit and keep away with Nass Raveller.

Betting Strategy – KERCHAK (4) will lose one but save on RATIONS (6).

Race 7 – Class 2 Handicap 1350 min

Matt Dunn’s strike rate in Brisbane is a matter of great concern and he has two good chances at Harlequin Field (5) and Stormy Rock (1). HARLEQUIN FIELD has chased after its last two Ipswich outings but has found a good one at every opportunity. He will appreciate the long journey and can move forward with Nass Ravelr and it is difficult to pass. STORMY ROCK has made a good place in the strong Saturday grade from this last start and has no objection to stepping on the journey. The 2 kg claim helps Kyle Wilson-Taylor and could end if he stays away from the conditions.

Safia (10) was not helped by the wide gate of Ipswich to restart. She will appreciate this extra distance and will benefit from a positive ride with a good draw.

MYSTIC AROMA (13) will be happy to return to Midweek Company and end with the final start of STORMY ROCK. Extra distances should be consistent and they can be as high as possible.

Merimi (12) has shown the promise of final preparation and is doing well in the trial. She returns, but she has already won and will run.

TITANIUM (8) gives them a start but is tempted to do nothing and can hit the line if the tempo is strong.

Betting Strategy – Another race full of opportunities. Make your choice.

Race 8 – Benchmark 65 Handicap 1200 min

Many of them like to go ahead and have a good first-up record of King’s Rule (6). He tested it well, it is suitable for travel and Brett Preble can sit them down and get late.

ALL TO DO (1) got very hard and found him 1400m from the last start. The 2kg claim for Kyle Wilson-Taylor, the grade drop, the get one and the short trip are all in his favor here and he should be the lead.

Jihan (19) is making her first start after Ron Heathcote came to join. Her test is strong and she will have every chance with Ben Thompson from Gate Two.

All of DEJANOVA’s (5) wins have been on the Sunshine Coast but a good draw and strong pace will ensure an easy run and she can reach the finish line.

Private Cheetah (18) has been disappointing but gets some gear changes and will be prominent.

Betting Strategy – Some value with King’s Rule (6).

Best bet: SCICONIC (Race 4 No. 2)

Another great: King’s Rule (Race 8 No. 6)

Price condition: Mysterious Gems (Race 1 No. 5)

Quaddie numbers are:

Run 5: 1,5

Race 6: 4,6

Race 7: 1,5,10,13

Race 8: 1,6,19

48 combinations
