TORONTO — The city of Toronto says it is on track to exceed its target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The city says greenhouse gas emissions in 2019 were 38 percent lower than in 1990.

It has set a target of a 30 percent reduction by 2020, a 65 percent reduction by 2030 and a net emission reduction by 2050.

The city says residential, commercial and industrial buildings are responsible for 57 percent of emissions, mainly from the natural gas used to heat them.

Transportation is the second largest source of emissions at 36 percent, with vehicle gasoline being the leading cause of greenhouse gases.

The city says it needs to reduce its emissions quickly if it wants to reach its 2030 target.
