Inter Milan CL next to the knockout stage

Three-time European king Inter Milan have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League after Edin Dzeko’s double gave Shakhtar Donetsk a 2-0 win.

Dijeko broke the deadlock after an hour-long disappointment for Inter, who had previously conceded two goals and wasted many other chances.

His second goal in the 67th minute ensured that there was no way back for Shakhtar who hit late in the post.

Inter have a temporary lead of 10 points in Group D and Real Madrid will be in the last 16 with one game remaining if they lose to the Sheriff in the next group game of the day.

“The day I signed my contract here, I said it was our goal,” said Simon Inzaghi, the coach who took charge of Inter in the off-season.

Meanwhile, Ajax beat Besiktas 2-1 on a Rachid Gazzel penalty in the first half after Sebastian Haller scored twice in the second half.

Haller, 27, has scored nine goals in five games in the group stage, equaling Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski in the Champions League scoring charts this season.

Dutch giants Ajax have an excellent 15 points while Besiktas are out of Europe after five defeats.

In the next game of the group, Borussia Dortmund is welcomed by each side with 6 points.
