State Police Investigate Fatal Accident in Sumner Tunnel

State police are investigating a Sunday morning car accident in the Sumner Tunnel that killed a driver and injured two passengers, a statement said.

At 3:20 a.m. troopers from the State Police Tunnels Barracks responded to a single-vehicle accident in the Sumner Tunnel on the ramp to Storrow Drive.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found three occupants in the vehicle, each with serious injuries, according to the statement.

Police said the 24-year-old driver, a man from Northampton, died at the scene. The passengers, an 18-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man, were transported by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries, according to officials.

The driveway was closed during the investigation and clean-up of the car.

The facts and circumstances of the crash are still under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police, with assistance from the State Police’s Crime Scene Services Division and the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Division.

Troopers were also assisted at the scene by the Medical Examiner’s Office, Boston EMS and Mass DOT.
