Second death in less than two years at Central Queensland mine

One worker died overnight at a mine in central Queensland, shutting down operations at the site.

The crash happened at the Kurragh coal mine, 170 kilometers west of Rockhampton, the second death in less than two years. A 33-year-old man was killed in January 2020.

Emergency services were called to the site on Blackwater’s Blackwater Kororah Road at 2.15am on Sunday.

A 54-year-old male worker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mine owner Coronado Global Resources issued a statement confirming the death on Sunday morning and promised to provide timely updates.

A spokesman said operations in Curragh had been temporarily suspended to allow authorities to work through the necessary investigative activities.

“The company is focused on supporting staff and workers’ families in Curragh, and providing consulting services.

A full investigation into the crash is under way, and Coronado is working with Queensland Police, the Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Mines and Energy and other officials.

“Coronado extends his deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the employee.”
