PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A pregnant woman was shot and killed Saturday night after returning home from her own baby shower. The gunfire started just after 8:30 p.m. in the 6100 block of Palmetto Street.
Philadelphia police said officers shot a 32-year-old woman, who was seven months pregnant, in the head and abdomen.
Emergency services took her to hospital where she was pronounced dead just after 9 p.m. The unborn child was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
“It’s a lot of women and children and women who are being shot,” Deputy Police Commissioner Christine Coulter told CBS3.
Coulter said the victim was carrying presents from her own baby shower when the shooting happened.
“A few blocks away was an officer who heard the shots. When they got here, they discovered her shot several times,” Coulter said.
On Sunday morning, Mayor Jim Kenney tweeted about the shooting and said the city is offering a $50,000 prize for information leading to an arrest.
This news is deeply disturbing and heartbreaking. My heart goes out to the victim’s loved ones at this painful time.
