Hamas gunmen kill one and injure four Israelis in the Old City of Jerusalem

One person was killed and four others were injured when a Hamas militant opened fire on them in the Old City of Jerusalem on Sunday, police said.

It was not immediately clear Hamas, An Islamic militant group that has vowed to destroy Israel, has ordered the attack, or one of its members has acted alone.

Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, has largely adhered to a ceasefire with Israel after an 11-day war in May, and shootings in the old city are rare.

Police said the attack took place near the entrance to the controversial Flashpoint shrine, known to Jews as Temple Mount and Muslims as Noble Century. Violence around the site, which is considered sacred by both faiths, began in May with a previous round of fighting.

Israeli officials say Eliahu Ke, a 26-year-old South African immigrant, was shot dead. Kay recently worked on the Western Wall, the holiest place for Jews to pray. The condition of one of the four injured is critical.

Police say the attacker was a 42-year-old Palestinian from East Jerusalem. Palestinian media identified him as Fadi Abu Shakhaidem, a high school teacher near him.

In Gaza, Hamas hailed the attack as a “heroic act” and said Abu Shakhaidim was one of its members, but denied responsibility for the attack.

Spokesman Abdel Latif al-Kanou said, “Until our desired goals are achieved and the occupation of our holy sites and all our lands is expelled, the resistance of our people against the Zionist occupiers will continue legitimately by all means and means,” spokesman Abdel Latif al-Kanou said.

Hamas has fought four wars against Israel since taking control of Gaza from rival Fatah in 2007.

Israel and Egypt have maintained a repressive blockade on Gaza since the capture of Hamas, which has hit the region’s already weak economy hard. Israel and Hamas have been holding indirect talks through Egyptian mediators aimed at cementing a long-term ceasefire in the May conflict.

Israel, the United States and the EU consider Hamas a terrorist group. The United Kingdom said on Friday that it planned to ban Hamas as a terrorist group and that there was no longer any distinction between its political and military wings.

Israel’s figurehead president, Isaac Herzog, landed in the UK on Sunday for an official visit, urging other countries to follow suit. “The fact that the terrorist is from the ‘political wing’ of Hamas forces the international community to recognize it as a terrorist group,” he tweeted.

EU Ambassador-designate to Israel Dmitry Tzanchev condemned what he described as a “stupid attack” on civilians. “Violence is never the answer,” he said.

Sunday’s incident is the second of its kind in recent days in the Old City of Jerusalem. A Palestinian teenager was shot dead on Wednesday after stabbing two Israeli border police officers.

Palestinians have in recent years attacked Israeli civilians and security forces with dozens of knives, bullets and car bombs. Palestinians and rights groups say some of the alleged clashes were accidents and that Israel has used excessive force.

Shootings around the Old City of Jerusalem and its holy sites are relatively rare, however, and Israel maintains a large security presence in the area.

In the 1967 war, Israel occupied East Jerusalem, the Old City and its Christian, Muslim and Jewish sanctuaries, along with the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. It later captured East Jerusalem in a move that was largely unrecognized by the international community.

Palestinians seek the occupied West Bank and Gaza as the capital of East Jerusalem for a future independent state.
