The Kremlin welcomes direct contacts between Belarus and the European Union on the migrant crisis

Moscow – AFP
The Kremlin on Wednesday welcomed the establishment of direct contact between European and Belarusian officials to try to resolve the migrant crisis at the Polish-Belarusian border.
“There is an exchange of views to resolve (the situation), and it is very important that direct contact is established,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko spoke by phone on Monday, and EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell spoke with Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei from November 14-16.
These direct talks, which the Kremlin has called for, come at a time when Europeans have minimized contact with Minsk due to the suppression by the Belarusian authorities, from the summer of 2020, of a large-scale protest movement.
European countries did not recognize Lukashenko’s re-election last year and approved sanctions against his regime.
The European Union believes that Minsk is the one that orchestrated the current migrant crisis in response to the sanctions, encouraging migrants, most of whom are Iraqis, to come to Belarus to cross the border into Poland, while Lukashenko denied these allegations.
