Irish man driving on Pan-American Highway dies in Mexico crash

An Irish pilot has been killed in a road accident in Mexico.

Ambrosius Blaine, a married father of three who hailed from Killala in Co mayo, but lived in Malahide, Co Dublin, died in a collision with a vehicle that apparently did not stop at an intersection in the Ciudad Constitution.

This city is located about two and a half hours north of La Paz, in the Mexican state baja California.

Mr Blaine, who had worked in an advisory capacity for: Turkish Airlines, was riding a motorcycle at the time of the accident.

The incident happened around 7:20 a.m. local time on Monday. Blaine is believed to have suffered serious head injuries and, despite the best efforts of a hospital neurosurgeon in La Paz., Baja California Sur, didn’t regain consciousness.

Mr Blaine and three Irish companions cycled the Baja Peninsula as part of a journey begun in 2016 that took them annually in stages from the south Argentina until Alaska, traveling the Pan-American Highway.

The four motorcyclists left Ireland on November 6 to pick up where they left off last year and hope the United States on this part of the journey, 25 days of cycling.

It is known that Mr Blaine and the others had left their lodgings early Monday and were drinking coffee when the accident happened.

John O’Kelly, who traveled with him, said he was devastated by what had happened.

ÔÇťAmbrose was a really great guy. Full of fun and laughter and well known in all walks of life, especially in aviation circles. We are all devastated and thinking of his family,” O’Kelly said.

The Mexican police are investigating the accident and it is clear that the Irish embassy in Mexico City is assisting the three motorcyclists. Significant formalities will need to be completed before Mr Blaine’s remains can be repatriated to Ireland.

Neither Mr O’Kelly nor the other two motorcyclists in the party were injured in the crash.

Blaine, who was devoted to his family, is survived by his wife, Ann and his daughters, Aoibhin, Niamh, Anna and grandson Cillian, whom he adored.
