Riske, Christian Linz Have Reached The Final

After losing the first set 7-5 due to a right hand injury, Alison Riske advanced to the final of the Upper Austrian Ladies Linz.

It was the only set played on the day of the semifinals, with Simona Halep withdrawing from her all-Romanian game against Jacqueline Christian due to a knee injury.

This is the 11th final of Riske’s career and the second of the season after losing to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in Puerto Rico, Slovenia in September.

“Honestly, I have no words for that,” said the 73rd-ranked American, who has won two career WTA titles and was ranked 18th two years ago due to various injuries that knocked him out for nine months.

“I had a really rocky year. It was a slow process coming back. I get emotional thinking about it because it was definitely a journey. So, I’m very grateful to have reached the finals.”

Riske also tied 3-3 with a 3-1 win over third-seeded Collins and took another break at 5-5 before ending the set with a love game on his server.

Collins, who played with his right hand tape, was attended by a physio but quickly indicated he could not play. Before leaving the court, she hugged Riske.

Riske has never played with Christian before.

The 100th-ranked Romanian reached her first WTA final after Halep was knocked out hours before her game in Wednesday’s quarter-final due to a knee injury.

“I do everything I can to be able to play, but it’s swollen and painful and playing makes it worse,” Halep wrote on Twitter.

The comeback ended Halep’s strike, which had previously been at the top of the table, winning at least one tournament each year since 2013.

Despite losing the Christian selection, another Romanian player, Sorana Serestia, withdrew from the competition and reached the main draw.

Christian became only the fifth “lucky loser” to reach the WTA final since 2000.

The next time, American Coco Gough performed at the same Austrian indoor event two years ago and won the title.
