A Metal Gear Solid PS5 remake without Hideo Kojima is sacrilege

Is Kojima coming back for a Metal Gear Solid remake? (photo: Konami)

One reader argues that if the rumors of a Metal Gear Solid remake are true, creator Hideo Kojima must be involved or it’s not worth it.

It has been rumored for years that Konami, possibly in partnership with Sony, is looking for a full-scale remake of Metal Gear Solid. The original game rarely appears in remaster collections because being so old it doesn’t remaster well and the PS1 graphics and gameplay definitely show their age (although I’d say the presentation is still way above average even now – the is so far ahead of its time!).

As a classic game approaching its 25th anniversary, Metal Gear Solid is a perfect candidate for an upgrade, and I’d be a little shocked if the remake rumors weren’t true. Whether it’s about last one on a christmas reveal or not doesn’t matter, it’s too obvious an idea – with very little financial risk – that it’s going to happen at some point.

The problem is to make it without Hideo Kojima. The whole Metal Gear saga is his creation and unsurprisingly as soon as he left Konami they found it impossible to replace him, only made the horrible Metal Gear Survive before realizing it was a disaster and it was useless to try without one of the few authors in the video game industry.

Kojima is now a free agent, but there are no rumors of him being involved in a remake. There are rumors that he’s involved with Silent Hill, so it’s not like there’s any information leaking out, but nothing about him being involved in a new Metal Gear Solid. What means, what? That Konami either takes the one who wasn’t good enough for Kojima to his new company or some other cheap producer or director who isn’t good enough to make their own original game.

If you want to recreate Metal Gear Solid, you essentially have to create a new game. It doesn’t make sense in my opinion to just make the same thing, but with better graphics. That looks ridiculous with the top-down graphics and small game areas. Just making it third person or adding a first person mode isn’t the answer either.

Just look at The Twin Snakes to see how bad things can turn out if you don’t change everything at once – and that was a game that both Kojima and Shigeru Miyamoto worked on! (Although only as producers, most of the work was done by Canadian firm Silicon Knights.)

Metal Gear Solid is a classic video game and should be treated the same as a Blu-ray remaster of Casablanca or Lawrence Of Arabia. Those kinds of movies are always made with great care and if it’s a newer movie, where the director is still alive, they’re closely involved in it. And Kojima is still very much alive.

If they can get him on board, a remake would be great. I’d imagine it as an over-the-shoulder third-person game, similar to Metal Gear Solid 5 but not an open world. You can re-record the dialogue with better actors (but ideally not with Kiefer Sutherland), do a new script/translation, and rethink the fights and boss encounters to fit modern graphics.

This is what I mean by it must be almost a new game. If it isn’t, there’s no point and if it isn’t with Hideo Kojima’s involvement, it’s impossible that so many changes will come across as authentic.

I have no idea if Kojima agrees to be involved, as I said, there are no rumors about it. But if he isn’t, it just shouldn’t be happening, end of story. Some creators are so closely associated with their creations that it just doesn’t make sense to go on without them. I mean, look what happened to Star Wars movies when they got rid of George Lucas. They can’t be worse than the prequels, right? Well guess what…

Hideo Kojima is Metal Gear Solid and I hope if Konami and/or Sony are planning a remake they realize this.
