For months, my Lenovo Yoga C940 laptop was playing tricks on me.
A minute’s display will be pleasantly brighter, but due to the slow drop in the switch on something with a black background, the screen provides an almost distortion appearance. I can also see the change kick when switching to apps, if some automatic brightness setting is constantly messing up, but the Windows settings menu doesn’t offer any obvious solution.
Eventually though I found the source of the problem. The latest on Windows laptops powered by Intel is a program called Intel Graphics Command Center, which includes a wide array of virtual nubs and dials to adjust the look of your laptop’s screen. After making a few small adjustments in between this program, my laptop’s brightness issues went away.
My Lenovo Yoga is not the only Windows laptop with this kind of problem. As a laptop reviewer for PCWorld, I have experienced, along with many other Lenovo laptops, auto-brightness issues. Anyway, Intel’s graphics command center application is worth a look. By playing with its various color and contrast options, you can make your laptop’s screen look better than its exterior.
How to fix windows auto brightness problems
To start the Intel Graphics Command Center application in Windows 10, just click the Start button and type Intel, Which should bring the graphics command center as the first option. Alternatively, you can find it by scrolling through the ‘I’ section of your alphabet application list.
When you first launch the app, Intel will advertise a couple of gaming-related features. Just ignore these and choose instead System Tab on the left sidebar (or, if the application is running in a small window, the icon that looks like a square). At the top of the screen, select the tab that says Power.
To prevent your laptop from changing its own contrast levels, look in the Power Settings section and switch to Power Efficiency Level 1.
In this menu you can also turn off all power efficiency settings Dynamic refresh rate switch Or Extend battery life for game terry Options at the top, but I found that only Intel’s image visibility does a good job of reducing the slider’s aggression.
Does changing these settings change your laptop’s battery? Not happening In fact, my tests show that dialing Intel’s power efficiency settings became one To grow Battery life.
My first test was to loop open source KK video Steel tears– The same PC that we use in PCWorld’s battery rundown test – without any noise on my Lenovo Yoga C940 at maximum brightness. With Intel’s power efficiency setting at its default level, the laptop was 10 hours 36 minutes long. Set to power efficiency level 1, the laptop ran 10 hours 53 minutes.
I also created my own video to mimic the ups and downs of contrast which would have been very annoying for me to start with. This video captured my desktop screen as it flipped every 10 seconds in a light and dark background. In that test, the laptop ran for 11 hours and 9 minutes at Intel’s default power efficiency level, but with power efficiency level 1, it lasted a full 12 hours and 46 minutes.
Increasing the power efficiency level reduces image quality, thus increasing the battery life, but in my case the opposite was true. While your mileage may vary depending on the laptop and usage case, it’s safe to say that Intel’s power efficiency software doesn’t significantly improve battery life. It can also be counter productive.
PCWorld reached out to Intel for comment, and received the statement: “Intel Display Power Saving Technology (DPST) reduces power consumption on mobile PCs by reducing the backlight of laptop panels while maintaining screen quality. Users can notice this effect at work when switching between app and media when in battery mode. Our OEM partners are able to change the default behavior for DPST as they see fit. On some mobile PCs, DPST can be disabled in Intel graphics settings. Over time we will continue to improve the performance of DPST to provide better mobile experiences. ”
How to adjust the color and contrast of your laptop
While you’re checking out the Intel Graphics Command Center app, take a minute to go to the Display tab (or click the Computer Monitor icon while the app is running in a small window). From here, click Color Tab, and you’ll see a menu to adjust the brightness, contrast, color, and saturation of your display.
Before you try to make any adjustments, click Custom Button at the top to create a new color profile, then give the profile a name. Now, try adjusting the brightness, contrast, and ue and saturation levels in this menu. Toggling All colors Options for brightness and contrast also allow you to adjust personal and color intensities.
I’ve found that less is more, and just a few small tweaks can make a big difference to what your screen looks like. Just click if you want to restore your computer’s pre-set settings. Default The box at the top of this menu.
The Intel Graphics Command Center application has a few other options, such as a video-specific image settings menu, capture tools, and the ability to set keyboard shortcuts for screen rotation. You can safely ignore these, as none of them are as useful as the app’s power settings and color options.
To be clear, none of these settings are new. The Intel Graphics Command Center began a few years ago as a development of Intel’s older graphics control panel.. Intel says it’s very easy to use and understand.
Unfortunately, Intel and PC vendors seem to have taken some away in their passion for better battery life, pre-loading laptops with power management settings that do more harm than good. If you suspect that your own laptop is playing tricks on you, dialing back to those settings may be the only answer.
